Sumit Nagal in final of Asian Indoor Games tennis

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 24:

Second seed Sumit Nagal beat the Uzbek Davis Cupper Farrukh Dustov 6-4, 7-5 to make the men’s singles final in tennis in the Asian Indoor Games in Turkmenistan on Sunday.

‘’Sumit made a lot of returns and thus put pressure back on Dustov who had a very high percentage of first serves’’, observed coach Ashutosh Singh.

The coach was happy with the maturity and adaptability of the young Sumit.

‘’Sumit has adjusted to indoors quite well after having a long clay season. I tshows the growing maturity in his game’’, he said.

Sumit will await the winner of the other semifinal between top seed Sanjar Fayziev of Uzbekistan and compatriot Vijay Sundar Prashanth, scheduled for Monday.

‘’Vijay will need to raise his game by being more aggressive in intent and consistent in first serves. He is really playing very well’’, said the coach, quite content to look at one match at a time and keep things simple.

Meanwhile, Vijay Sundar Prashanth and Vishnu Vardhan made the doubles semifinals, after a bye in the first round.

Vishnu Vardhan and Prarthana Thombare in mixed final of AIMAG 2017

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 23:

The top-seeded Vishnu Vardhan and Prarthana Thombare made the mixed doubles final of tennis in the Asian Indoor Games in Turkmenistan on Saturday.

Vishnu and Ankita had to be at their best in taming Sanjar Fayziev and Arina Folts of Uzbekistan 7-6(4), 7-6(6) in the semifinals.

The Indian pair will face Nuttanon Kadchapanan and NIcha
Lertpitaksinchai of Thailand in the final.

Meanwhile, Vijay Sundar Prashanth fought his way past Timur Khabibulin of Kazakhstan 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) in the men’s singles quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Prashanth will challenge the top seed Sanjar Fayziev of Uzbekistan who battled past Hong Kit Wong of Hong Kong in three sets.

The other semifinal will feature the second seed Sumit Nagal against the other Daviis Cupper from Uzbekistan, Farrukh Dustov.

In women’s doubles, the top seeds Ankita Raina and Prarthana Thombare raced into the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the Filipinos, Khim Iglupas and Anna Patrimonio. The Indian pair, which had a bye in the first round, will play Jessy Rompies and Lavinia Tananta of Indonesia in the semifinals.

Sasi Kumar Mukund triumphs

Top seed Sasi Kumar beat his doubles partner, qualifier Arjun Kadhe 6-3, 6-4 for the title in the $15,000 ITF men’s Futures tennis tournament at the Perks School in Coimbatore, on Saturday.

It was the second successive title for the 20-year-old Mukund who had won last week in Tharamani in Chennai.
Mukund did not drop a set the whole week in winning his fifth career singles title on the professional circuit, and the third of the season.

Mukund is the eighth best Indian in the singles ranking at 501, behind Ramkumar Ramanathan (153), Yuki Bhambri (156), Prajnesh Gunneswaran (244), Sumit Nagal (270), Sriram Balaji (344), Vishnu Vardhan (421) and Vijay Sundar Prashanth (486).

In the doubles, Mukund and Kadhe were beaten by the top seeds, the Sood twins, Chandril and Lakshit. It was the 11th title as a pair for the Sood brothers, and the fourth of the season.

The champions collected 18 ATP points and the runners-up 10.

Singles: Sasi Kumar Mukund bt Arjun Kadhe 6-3, 6-4.

Doubles: Chandril Sood and Lakshit Sood bt Arjun Kadhe & Sasi Kumar Mukund 6-4, 6-2.
