Divij Sharan triumphs with Scott Lipsky in Antwerp

NEW DELHI, OCT. 22.

Divij Sharan in partnership with Scott Lipsky of the US won the doubles title in the € 660,375 European Open tennis tournament in antwerp, Belgium, on Sunday.

The Indo-US pair beat Santiago Gonzalez of Mexico and Julio Peralta of Chile 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 in an hour and 10 minutes.

‘’Really happy to win a Tour event. It has not been easy the last couple of months. I have played with a lot of different partners. This is a big one. I have tried to just focus on myself and improve my game’’, said Divij when contacted by The Hindu.

Being an unseeded team, Divij was pleased with the way he combined with Scott Lipsky to beat some ‘’really good teams’’.

‘’This should definitely help my confidence, going forward’’, signed off Divij.

The champion team collected € 31,910 and 250 ATP points. The runner-up won € 16,780 and 150 points.

It was Gonzalez and Peralta who dominated the proceedings, but only till the super tie-break, in which the Indo-American pair affixed its stamp of authority.

Gonzalez and Peralta converted two of five breakpoints, to one of three by Divij and partner. The champion team won 52 points to 53 by its opponents, but won the points that did matter in the end.

It was the third ATP Tour doubles title for the 31-year-old Divij, ranked No.66 in doubles, who had won the previous two titles with Purav Raja in Bogota in 2013 and in Los Cabos last year. He had won a Challenger title in Bordeaux this season with Purav before the latter joined hands with Leander Paes prior to the US Open.

Meanwhile, in a rare phenomenon of two twins playing each other, the second seeded Sood brothers, Chandril and Lakshit, were beaten by the top seeds Ivan Sabanov and Matej Sabanov of Croatia, in straight sets in the doubles final of the $25,000 ITF Futures in Nigeria.

The results:

€ 660,375 European Cup, Antwerp, Belgium
Doubles (final): Scott Lipsky (US) & Divij Sharan bt Santiago Gonzalez (Mex) & Julio Peralta (Chi) 6-4, 2-6, 10-5.

$25,000 ITF men, Lagos, Nigeria
