HEARTBREAKING LOSS FOR INDIA

It was the big day of the championships, as India was against the European Champions Romania. It was a close call as Sumit Nagal was kept fresh for doubles in the hope that Sahil Deshmukh would pull another upset in singles and when it comes to the deciding doubles, India can definitely be a stronger team. Ultimately, India went down 0-3 to Romania.

The day started off with Indian No. 2 Garvit Batra going down to the Romanian counterpart Nicolay Frunza without a fight at 1-6, 2-6.

Sahil once again came close to rescuing India as he looked all set to upset the European No. 1 Bogdan Borza 4-6, 6-1, 2-6 in 1hr 50 min. Borza raced to a 4-1 lead in the first set before Sahil broke him to level the set at 4-4. Sahil had his chances in the 9th game with a break point but the ball narrowly missed being a winner.

Sahil got broken in the 10th game and it was first set to the Romanian. In the second set, Sahil gave no chance as he raised his game and stepped up the pressure and won 6 games in a row to take the second set 6-1.

In the third set, Sahil broke Borza in the service game and was up 2-0. A tentative next 2 games by Sahil gave the confidence to the Romanian who won 6 games in a row. Every game was well contested and got to deuce.

It was a heartbreaking loss for Sahil against the European No. 1. But all credit goes to him as he put up a splendid fight. They lost both the singles and the tie was decided.

Sahil rested for the day as he needs to shoulder responsibility in the next 2 ties as it was needed to get the highest position possible though we play for 5 - 8.

In the inconsequential doubles match, Sumit Nagal teamed with Garvit Batra and lost to the Romanian combination of Ion Efrim / Nicolay Frunza 3-6, 5-7 in 1 hr 20 min.

For position 5-8, we play the No. 2 team from Group C, Argentina while in the other tie, China takes on France.
