Sahil Deshmukh was the hero of the day for India as he won both his matches against 8 th seeded Canada in the opening league match of Group ‘D' of the World Junior Tennis Final.
Sahil won his singles against Canadian No. 1 David Volfson 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-3. He was serving 4-2 in the second set but due to a momentary lapse in concentration, he lost the second set with a few unforced errors. However he raised his game in the 3 rd set to overpower the consistent Volfson.
His win leveled India 1-1 in the singles as earlier in the day, Indian No. 2 player Sumit Nagal went down to the Canadian Counterpart Alejandro Tabilo 2-6, 1 -6.
It came to the all important doubles match when Sahil Deshmukh teamed with Sumit Nagal seal India's victory in this tie with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 against Alejandro Tabilo / David Volfson. After winning the first set with ease, the Canadians took advantage of the relaxation that had set in with the Indian combination to take a 4-1 lead before the Indians fought back to level it 4-4. Sahil got broken for the first time in the match and then Tabilo held his serve to take the second set.
However, the 3 rd set went equal until 3-3 when the Indian combination raised their game with aggression to take the set & match 6-3.
India will take on Spain tomorrow in the next league match. Spain today lost 1-2 to second seeds Romania.
